Research, design, construct, test, and re-think of ways to improve! Create bridges using a variety of materials. How much weight can it hold? Can it withstand a hurricane? How can you make it stronger, taller, longer?

Fling, Fly and Move

4th-6th Grades

Cost: $15

Set objects in motion while building a variety of devices that fling and fly! Build an easy to fly kite, make a spool racer, and launch pom poms across the room along with other fast-moving activities. Investigate forces and how objects speed up, slow down, and change directions.

Math Museum

Explore the creative side of math! Use your measuring skills to make an “impossible object” illusion drawing. Use graph paper for designing and illustrating mazes and Celtic knot designs. Practice fractions, decimals, and percentages while creating a piece of color-block modern art. Explore shapes while making patchwork paper patterns.

Changing Landforms

The surface of Earth is ever changing. Learn how natural processes like weathering and erosion change the shape of the land. See how fossils provide evidence of earth’s history and see why earthquakes and volcanoes happen in predictable places.

Design, build, and test basic electrical circuits while making a piece of light-up paper art, wiring wall switches, and playing with squishy circuit dough. Investigate material properties as you build an insulator/conductor board and design your own battery powered jitter critter to take home.

Cost: $10

Get familiar with our nearest star. Make an ultraviolet light detector and engineer a protective shelter for a model astronaut. Use an infrared thermometer to observe the temperature difference between natural and man-made materials to see how the sun heats the surface of the earth. Make a model of the sun and use the sun to make a beautiful print. (Activities may change due to weather).

What makes a car “cool”? Explore elements of car design while viewing the cars on display in the Durant Gallery. Define your criteria and use your engineering skills to design, build, and test a buggy powered by compressed air.

Ever been curious about the world of coding? Learn about the history of how it all got started, while using basic coding skills to play games and create art. Put your new found skills to the test by programming code for a dash robot to make it move, draw, or even throw a ball.

3-Day Camps


Date: June 25 - 27, 2024 | Tues - Thurs
Time: 1 - 4 p.m.

Hone your maker skills! Build a sling puck board game out of wood, make a spin art machine, and recycle plastic bags into fabric. Children will also be given time and access to a wide variety of tools and materials, including 3d printers and a laser engraver, to design and work on self-directed projects.

Renewable Energy

Fossil fuels or green energy: how is the electricity in our community generated? See how fossil fuel was formed and how it’s used and learn about renewable energy sources while building a model wind turbine and experimenting with mini-solar panels. Work together to build a model city while thinking about where the community’s power will come from.

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the museum archives? Step behind the scenes and explore some of the mysteries of the Sloan Museum of Discovery. Dig into the history of some of the museum's collections. We will work together to curate a small exhibit that will be displayed for the community. You never know what you might uncover.

5-Day Camps

Longway Planetarium partners with some of Genesee County’s best teachers! Guest teachers from the Alpha Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society will be on hand as girls explore Art with STEM. Create moving sculptures and use a hobby motor, markers, and found objects to build a delightful piece of art that draws by itself. Visit the Planetarium Garden and use plant parts to pound out beautiful prints on fabric. Learn about density and solubility as you marble paper and use alcohol inks. These artful projects will help you explore the creative side of STEM!

•Coding – Work together to program a Dash robot. Can you help Dash navigate an obstacle course that you created?
