Renaissance Kid
4th-6th Grades

Study the artists, explore the inventions, challenge yourself to think like a Renaissance kid. Learn about the connections between science and art during the Renaissance period in this engaging program that brings science, art, and history to life.

Physics Fun
4th-6th Grades

Things will be flying, falling, and flinging while we explore forces and motion. Make carboard flipper toy, design your own catapult, and use gravity to make a beautiful work of art.

Miniature Gardens

Visit the Sloan Museum of Discovery greenhouse and get growing! Design your own mini-garden in a container to take home while learning the basics of plant life.

Rocks and Fossils
4th-6th Grades

Grades: 4th – 6th
Cost: $10
Add to your rock and fossil collection while taking a tour through the rock cycle. Use mineral chips to make a piece of jewelry and learn how fossils provide evidence of past life.

Between the Lines
4th-6th Grades

Cost: $15
Together we will explore devices that authors may use to imply more than what a single glance at their words may imply. We will look at similes, metaphors, riddles, and puzzles, then use what we have learned to help solve a literary escape room.

Car Design
4th-6th Grades

Cost: $15
Take a tour through the Durant Gallery to explore how cars have changed over the years. Build a simple buggy chassis and add an aerodynamic design to it then test it at the Wind Wall in Discovery Hall.

Chemical Investigations
4th-6th Grades

See how matter can be changed while investigating physical and chemical changes. Get an introduction to the Periodic Table, acids and bases, and use chemical tests to identify a mystery powder.

Electrical Connections

Learn the basics of electrical circuits using batteries, bulbs, buzzers, and switches. Use what you learn to build a propeller-powered buggy.

Junior Curator

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the doors of the museum archives? Get a behind the scene look at the Sloan Museum of Discovery Collection. Work together to curate a small exhibit that will be displayed for the community during the month of August.

Martian Madness

Travel to our celestial neighbor and learn about the rocky red planet. Explore the rusty surface and join in on the search for ancient life on Mars!

Maker Camp
4th-6th Grades

Open-ended engineering challenges and creative projects with plenty of time to work on self-guided projects.
Jewelry Making: Learn and practice basic techniques while making your own unique jewelry creations.
Stop Motion Animation: Use wire and clay to shape your own character, write your story, create your scenery, and make a short stop motion animation.
Cardboard Construction: Engineering challenges and free building with cardboard.
5-Day Camps
Camp Alpha Omega for Girls: Expedition: Earth
3rd-6th Grades

Cost: $95
Longway Planetarium partners with some of Genesee County’s best teachers! Guest teachers from the Alpha Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society will be on hand as girls explore Earth from the inside out. Make a model volcano and make it erupt while learning about the Ring of Fire. Use mineral chips to make a beautiful piece of jewelry and investigate Earth’s place in space.
STEM Discovery Camp | 5-Day Camp
4th-6th Grades

Space Art: Explore the beauty of space while learning about planets, moons, stars, and galaxies. Make your own space-themed artwork.
Cardboard Automata: These kinetic sculptures blend engineering with art! Use cardboard, wire, and foam to build a system of cams and cam followers that put your artwork into motion.
Ecosystem Investigations: Build a terrarium to take home while exploring the needs of living things.
Energy: See how energy is moved from place to place and changes form while investigating electricity, sound, light, and heat.
