WE ENGAGE COMMUNITIES ON A LEARNING JOURNEY IN HISTORY AND SCIENCE

History Gallery

The re-imagined Flint history gallery features inclusive stories, designed with the flexibility to frequently change displays that span from the earliest inhabitants through history-in-the-making. The gallery includes interactive stepping stones that activate a video or audio story told from local residents; a section about Genesee County's contributions to winning WWII, including an actual 1943 Hellcat Tank Destroyer; an interactive trading post and real native American artifacts; Flint's storied lumbering history; the last Buick LeSabre that rolled off the former Buick City's assembly line signed by the hundreds of workers who helped build it; popular culture artifacts like the beloved Bozo The Clown original costume and the basketball costume Will Ferrell wore in the Flint-based movie Semi-pro; Flint's history on redlining and blockbusting; and much more!

Watch the St. John Street Oral History Project

This two-part documentary features interviews with residents who once lived in the vibrant and diverse St. John Street neighborhood that existed in north Flint, east of the former Buick City complex. Through a series of unfair practices, urban renewal and the construction of  I-475, the neighborhood was destroyed and its residents displaced. The story of redlining, blockbusting and injustice is echoed through the voices of residents who share their lived experiences and convey the spirit of their community. The documentary premiered December 19, 2022, on Sloan Museum of Discovery's YouTube Channel  Sloan Museum's History Gallery has a related exhibition on Fair Housing, Neighborhoods & Interstates that chronicles the practices that led to the neighborhood’s destruction.
