2024 Solar Eclipse | FREE Viewing Event

April 8, 2024 | Noon - 5 p.m.

A rare, near total eclipse or is happening on April 8, 2024! In Flint, the eclipse will begin at 1:58pm with the maximum occurring at 3:13pm. These rare events only occur when the Earth, Moon, and Sun align just right. Join the Longway Planetarium for an afternoon of fun activities including:

- Telescope solar viewing to view the eclipse
- Build and eclipse viewer hands on activity (while supplies last)
- Solar and lunar paper eclipse hands on activity (while supplies last)
- Viewing of NASA’s eclipse stream in the lobby
- Special showing of Totality every 30 min in the planetarium (add show for $3/person)

Please remember it is never safe to directly view the Sun without special equipment. Our telescopes will be fitted with solar filters and eclipse glasses are currently available for purchase in the gift shop.

October Solar Eclipse

On October 14, Genesee County will witness a partial solar eclipse. Telescopes will be available outside the dome for public viewing. To safely view the eclipse, special logo'd viewing glasses will be available in both the Longway gift shop and Museum store, located in Sloan Museum of Discovery, for just $2 per pair. The eclipse will start around 11:45 a.m. with the maximum partial eclipse occurring around 1:03 p.m. Join us on the lawn between Longway Planetarium and Flint Institute of Arts for an eclipse viewing party! Guests are also invited to visit Sloan Museum of Discovery - Discovery lab for a craft your own eclipse viewers workshop, going on from 10:30 to 4 p.m.
