“Lake Cabin” by John Davies is a product of Works Progress Administration, an agency created by FDR’s New Deal legislation. In an effort to provide jobs for out-of-work artists and beautify public spaces during the Great Depression, the WPA employed artists to create posters, murals, and paintings. The program ran from 1935 to 1943 and resulted in thousands of art pieces across the nation.
