Registration is now open for 2019 Summer Camps & Activities! Keep your kids learning and having fun all summer long with engaging hands-on science and social studies experiences, presented by Longway Planetarium and Sloan Museum educators. Grades listed are the grades children are entering in the Fall. Registration deadline is one week prior to the activity; however, classes frequently sell out. Register early to secure your spot.

History’s Mysteries

1st-3rd grades

Location: Longway Planetarium
Fee: $11
Discover fascinating myths dating back to the beginning of US history. Learn how Amelia Earhart to took the sky, find out if George Washington chopped down a cherry tree, and solve the mystery of Longway Planetarium.

Colors, Claws, Teeth and Jaws - SOLD OUT

Explore adaptations that help animals survive. Work with a team to create a camouflage mural, match birds with their best beaks, and design a model dinosaur.

Alpha Omega Girls Camp: There’s a STEM in My Book - SOLD OUT

Longway Planetarium partners with some of Genesee County’s best teachers! Guest teachers from the Alpha Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society will be on-hand as girls explore the literary side of STEM. From the “Three Little Pigs” to “The Wizard of Oz,” these fun and fast-paced activities will have you revisiting some of your favorite books, and might even add a few to your summer reading list.

Life in a Tree

1st-3rd grades

Whooo calls a tree their home? Explore trees and the habitats they provide for animals in your neighborhood. Then, watch “The Life of Trees” in the Longway Planetarium theater.

Digging for Gold - SOLD OUT

Journey westward and become a 49er for the day. Learn about Earth's metals and the men and women who participated in the American gold rush. Pan for gold and discover the science behind fool’s gold.

STEM Discovery Camp - SOLD OUT

Kids will explore these exciting science, technology, engineering, and math topics:
Forces and Motion: Make things roll, slide, and drop while building balloon buggies and ramps. Make a marble run and launch film canister rockets.
Get Growing: Investigate plant and animal lives as they grow through their life spans. Compare and contrast animal babies with their parents, explore life cycles, and plant some seeds to take home.
Earth in Space: Explore our planet and the Solar System. See how the Earth changes, find clues from Earth’s history, and tour the Solar System.
Engineering: Build something magnificent! Read a story, make a plan, design, and build your project out of found objects.

Earth Art - SOLD OUT

Use earth materials to create beautiful art! Make an air-dried clay bowl, use mineral chips to make a bracelet, and recycle some paper to make a note card.

Things Your Parents Wouldn’t Let You Do at Home - SOLD OUT

Measure, mix, and create your own soda pop recipe! Participate in a catapult battle and make an explosion in a plastic bag!

Superhero STEM - SOLD OUT

What kind of hero are you? Are you a genius scientist or as fast as lightening? Join forces with the heroes of Longway Planetarium to build an incredible chair for a gamma-irradiated hero. Use balloon rockets to fly your hero, and design your own cape and heroic vehicle to catch the bad guys.

Storytime STEM - SOLD OUT

1st-3rd grades

Listen to some of your favorite stories while exploring STEM. Build a home and see if the Big Bad Wolf can huff and puff and blow it down. Build a chair that’s just right for Baby Bear, plant your own beanstalk, and see if you can design a suit to help Humpty Dumpty survive his great fall!
