General Information

  • Deadlines for fees are 2 weeks prior to the event date. Space is limited and some dates fill up quickly. Early registration is strongly recommended.
  • Fees are non-refundable.
  • Registration is first-come, first-served.
  • With the exception of our Family Fun Night events, we request that no siblings or infants accompany the participant.
  • All workshops at Sloan Museum include museum admission. Leaders may want to schedule time to explore the museum on their own after their workshops.
  • A small snack will be provided during the workshops. Evening snack and light breakfast are provided during the overnights.
  • All workshop/overnight participants receive a certificate of participation. Leaders are responsible for obtaining the actual award from their local council office.

Clifford Family Fun Night

Calling all Daisies and Tiger Cubs! Bring your family and come enjoy the exhibition Adventures with Clifford The Big Red Dog at the Sloan Museum! Climb aboard the ferry and listen to seagulls as you approach Birdwell Island. Work together to fill Clifford’s big dog bowl, and slide down the tail of our 9-foot tall Clifford. Have an adventure on T-Bone’s beach, look for buried treasure and build a sandcastle. Price includes 2 slices of pizza, bag of chips, and juice box. Open to all levels of scouts and their families.

Planetarium Family Fun Night

Be The Astronaut Family Fun Night

Learn STEM subjects that help you explore space, and blast off seated in your very own space capsule. Meet a real robot and see actual spacesuits. Visit the Moon, Mars, and Jupiter and explore the Asteroid Belt. Drive a rover into the darkness of a lunar crater, and pilot a lander into a canyon on Mars. Price includes 2 slices of pizza, bag of chips, and juice box.

Overnight: Wonders of Water

Start your Journey by investigating where your water comes from. Explore the water cycle and participate in a clean water challenge. Learn about how much of our water is drinkable and how we get it to our sinks. Girls will be building and using a ground water system to pump water from their “well” and find out why pollution is so harmful. Take an adventure with many other hands-on, water related activities. Includes a planetarium theater show.

Workshop: Bugs

Alongside our planetarium pets, scouts will draw a bug poster to be displayed in the Longway classrooms, create a bug box, look at different types of bug homes, use magnifying glasses to look at our bugs, and use their imagination to build a bug of their own to take home! Does not include a planetarium theater show.

Get ready for an adventure and learn all about letterboxing! Practice your “seeking” skills to find hidden objects, and go on a letterbox search. Make your own special stamp, and create your own letterbox. Learn about secret codes and practice solving clues. Each group will need to bring a GPS receiver (or smart phone) with them for this workshop. Please dress for the weather! Does not include a planetarium theater show.

Overnight: Senses

Explore the world using your five senses! Test your visual memory by quickly looking at objects. How many will you remember? Listen to sound boxes, and find out how many sounds you can identify correctly. Play a smelly game with your scout friends while blindfolded! Have fun with food, and do a taste test of different flavors. Using the sense of touch, explore various textures and surfaces during a guessing game.

Grab your magnifying glasses and join us for a mystery filled evening. Practice the power of observation, break a code, and learn about fingerprints. Try out detective science and follow clues to solve a mystery.

Energy Workshop #1: Energy Introduction


It’s Your Planet – Love It Get Moving Series Leadership Journey
Date: Saturday, January 13, 2018

Max Registration: 45 people

Kick off your Get Moving Journey with an introduction to energy! Explore electricity, light, sound, solar, potential and kinetic energy with several fast paced, hands-on activities. Build circuits and switches using batteries, bulbs, and wires. Create obnoxious noise makers while investigating volume and pitch. Use mirrors to reflect rays of light and catch a rainbow on paper. Design a marble roller coaster, while investigating potential and kinetic energy. Does not include a planetarium theater show.

Energy Workshop #2: Plants and Animals Need Energy


It’s Your Planet – Love It Get Moving Series Leadership Journey

Plants and animals need energy to survive and grow. Build a terrarium in a bottle to take home, while investigating how plants produce energy from the sun. See how energy from the sun moves through the food web as you dissect an owl pellet. Explore physical adaptations of animals that help them catch their prey and avoid becoming lunch. Does not include a planetarium theater show.

Energy Workshop #3: Energy


It’s Your Planet – Love It Get Moving Series Leadership Journey
Date: Saturday, February 10, 2018
Time: 9:00am-12:00pm (Arrival 8:30am-9:00am)
Location: Longway Planetarium
Fee: $10 per person
Max Registration: 45 people

We use energy every day! Investigate how energy is generated and why it needs to be conserved while cookie mining. Build a draft checker to check for leaky doors and windows and sew a draft stopper to stop those leaks. Build a wind turbine to see how green technologies can save our resources and see how the sun can power a solar buggy. Does not include a planetarium theater show.

Work as a group to design and build a miniature energy-wise city model! Will your city make use of alternative energy sources like wind, solar, or hydroelectric power? Will you choose to design buildings with green roofs and natural lighting? How will people move from one place to another using less energy? What will you do with your trash? Will you protect habitats for plants and animals? Use boxes and craft materials to build your city. Does not include a planetarium theater show.

Workshop: Geocacher

Learn all about geocaching and prepare for an adventure! Learn how to use coordinates to find objects. Make a trade item, and take a multi-cache adventure. Overnight: Flowers

Explore the wonderful world of flowers by planting a seed or bulb, experimenting with a flower’s root system to dye a white flower their favorite color, make floral bath beads, create flower art, and design a beautiful bouquet. Includes a planetarium theater show.

Explore, help design, and plant the Longway Planetarium Garden! Learn which plants will grow best in your area by testing soil samples. Find out how variations in soil, sunlight, and water can affect your garden. Plant a “fairy garden” to take home with you. Weather permitting we will be working in the garden, please bring a rain jacket just in case! Does not include a planetarium theater show.

Cadette Workshops and Overnights

Overnight: Special Agent


Date: Friday, December 8 – Saturday, December 9, 2017
Time: 6:00pm-9:00am (Arrival 5:30pm-6:00pm)
Location: Sloan Museum
Fee: $26 per scout and $10 per adult
Max Registration: 50 people

Become special agents while exploring the world of forensics and espionage. Have a fingerprinting party, and identify different fingerprint types. Participate in an eyewitness challenge, and experiment with chromatography. Learn common “tells” to determine if someone is lying. Write and perform a short forensic-science crime drama skit with your fellow scouts.

Become a naturalist and get to the root of what trees are all about. Design a tree house, sketch your favorite tree and learn what kinds of plants or animals use your tree, create tree art, and learn about the logging industry in Michigan. Includes a planetarium theater show.

The night sky has captured the human imagination since the dawn of time. With today’s technologies it’s easy to overlook the mystery and beauty of the night skies. Join us in an overnight worth staying up for. With our own Planetarium Specialist, girls have the chance to gaze at the stars, look at the planets, and watch a planetarium show in our planetarium theater! If weather permits we will go outside to look at what is happening in the sky! Does not complete all badge requirements. Includes a planetarium theater show.

Explore the astronomy behind planets, stars, and the solar system. Build and launch a model rocket and explore the scientific principles of your design. Explore the causes and effects of light pollution. Make sky art to celebrate the wonders of the sky. Includes a Planetarium Theater Show.
