Registration Information

Register now for 2018-2019 Cub Scout, Webelos, and Boy Scout workshops and overnights at Longway Planetarium! View the 2018-2019 Boy Scouts Workshops and Overnights Interactive Brochure.

• Deadline for registration fees is 2 weeks prior to the event date. A $2 late fee will be added per person if registration deadline has passed. Fees are non-refundable. The Leader will be responsible for payment and registration of participants.
• Space is limited and some dates fill up quickly. Early registration is strongly recommended.
• A $2 processing fee will be charged for all online registrations.
• Registration is first-come, first-served. All scouts and adults must be registered and paid for prior to event. Due to material preparation costs, no refunds will be given for absent participants.

General Information
• With the exception of our Family Fun Night events, we request that no siblings or infants accompany the participant.
• A small snack will be provided during the workshops. Evening snack and light breakfast are provided during all overnights.
• All workshop and overnight participants receive a certificate of participation. Leaders are responsible for obtaining the actual award from their local council office.

Science at the Planetarium - Mar. 15

Good Knights Workshop

Date: Saturday, February 9, 2019
Time: 1:00-4:00 p.m. (Arrival 12:30-1:00 p.m.)
Location: Longway Planetarium
Fee: $10 per person
Max Registration: 100 people

Travel back in time to learn all about knights who lived many years ago, and find out what knights and Scouts have in common. Tiger Cubs will create a code of chivalry, make their own shields, build a small castle out of recycled materials, and participate in an obstacle course adventure! Does not include a planetarium theater show.

Explore the wonders of the night sky, and learn about the tools astronomers use to see the planets and stars. Design, create, and name your own constellation. Meet our Planetarium Specialist, and learn about different jobs related to astronomy. Watch an exciting show in our planetarium theater!

Motor Away Workshop

Date: Saturday, January 19, 2019

You have the power to make things move! Explore different ways to make and propel vehicles, such as airplanes, boats, and cars. Create and fly paper airplanes while learning about Bernoulli’s Principle, and make a paper airplane catapult. Build and sail two different types of boats, and create a car that moves under its own power and momentum. Does not include a planetarium theater show.

Air of the Wolf Workshop

This amazing adventure is all about air! Conduct science investigations about the weight of air and air temperature, and build your own paper airplane. Explore moving air and sound, and create a musical wind instrument. Build a kite using simple materials, and learn how to fly a kite safely. Does not include a planetarium theater show.

Grow Something Workshop

Discover which plants grow best in your area, and build a terrarium in a bottle to take home. Plant seeds in a tray, and make your own journal to record the progress of your seed garden at home. Does not include a planetarium theater show.

Forensics Overnight

Learn and practice the skills of a forensic scientist while analyzing fingerprints and footprints. Discover chromatography while studying the contents of ink during a simple experiment, and investigate some mysterious powder. Includes a planetarium theater show.

Learn all about the Scientific Method, and use it in simple scientific experiments. Make, explore and test static electricity in a series of investigations. Find out whether eggs sink or float using salt, sugar, and water. Perform amazing color experiments using simple materials and food coloring. Be ready to get messy and have fun! Make it Move Workshop

Using your imagination and inventor Rube Goldberg as inspiration, you will design and build your own elaborate machine to complete a very simple task! Learn all about potential and kinetic energy while creating an exploding craft stick reaction. Make simple levers and pulleys, and use them to move different objects. Does not include a planetarium theater show.

Art Explosion Workshop

Explore the world of engineering, and learn how engineers have helped shape our past, present, and future! Examine and use blueprints to help design and construct a project. Learn and practice civil engineering principles by building a bridge to take home. Build a marshmallow launcher, and explore aerodynamics through stomp rockets.

Adventures in Science Overnight

Discover how scientists ask and answer questions while you design and perform experiments pertaining to astronomy, physics, and electricity. Build a model solar system, study the night sky, build and launch a model rocket, create electrical circuits using light bulbs and batteries, and much more. Includes a planetarium theater show.

Finger Printing Merit Badge Workshop

Date: Saturday, April 27, 2019
Time: 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. (Arrival 8:30-9:00 a.m.)
Location: Longway Planetarium
Fee: $16 per person
Max Registration: 30 people

Explore the world of criminal investigation and forensic science. Learn about the different types of fingerprints, how they are classified and how fingerprints are used. Requirements 1 and 4 must be completed on your merit badge worksheet prior to arrival. Please bring a signed merit badge card. Does not include a planetarium theater show.
