General Information

  • Deadlines for fees are 2 weeks prior to the event date. Space is limited and some dates fill up quickly. EARLY REGISTRATION IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
  • Fees are non-refundable.
  • Registration is also available online at SloanLongway.org.
  • Registration is first-come, first-served.
  • With the exception of our Family Fun Night events, we request that no siblings or infants accompany the participant.
  • All workshops at Sloan Museum include museum admission. Leaders may want to schedule time to explore the museum on their own after their workshops.
  • A small snack will be provided during the workshops. Evening snack and light breakfast are provided during the overnights.
  • All workshop/overnight participants receive a certificate of participation. Leaders are responsible for obtaining the actual award from their local council office.

All Scout Family Fun Nights are open to all Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, and their families.
Does not need to be a troop/den group activity.

All Scouts-Clifford Family Fun Night

Calling all Daisies and Tiger Cubs! Bring your family and come enjoy the exhibition Adventures with Clifford The Big Red Dog at the Sloan Museum! Climb aboard the ferry and listen to seagulls as you approach Birdwell Island. Work together to fill Clifford’s big dog bowl, and slide down the tail of our 9-foot tall Clifford. Have an adventure on T-Bone’s beach, look for buried treasure and build a sandcastle. Price includes 2 slices of pizza, bag of chips, and juice box. Open to all levels of scouts and their families.

Learn STEM subjects that help you explore space, and blast off seated in your very own space capsule. Meet a real robot and see actual spacesuits. Visit the Moon, Mars, and Jupiter and explore the Asteroid Belt. Drive a rover into the darkness of a lunar crater, and pilot a lander into a canyon on Mars. Price includes 2 slices of pizza, bag of chips, and juice box.

Workshop: Motor Away

You have the power to make things move! Explore different ways to make and propel vehicles, such as airplanes, boats, and cars. Create and fly paper airplanes while learning about Bernoulli’s Principle, and make a paper airplane catapult. Build and sail two different types of boats, and create a car that moves under its own power and momentum. Does not include a planetarium theater show. Meets requirements: 1A, 1B, 2, 3

Workshop: Air of the Wolf

This amazing adventure is all about air! Conduct science investigations about the weight of air and air temperature, and build their own paper airplane. Explore moving air and sound, and create a musical wind instrument. Build a kite using simple materials, and learn how to fly a kite safely. Does not include a planetarium theater show. Overnight: Forensics

Learn and practice the skills of a forensic scientist while analyzing fingerprints and footprints. Discover chromatography while studying the contents of ink during a simple experiment, and investigate some mysterious powder. Meets requirements: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Learn all about the Scientific Method, and use it in simple scientific experiments. Make, explore, and test static electricity in a series of investigations. Find out whether eggs sink or float using salt, sugar, and water. Perform amazing color experiments using simple materials and food coloring. Be ready to get messy and have fun! Using your imagination and inventor Rube Goldberg as inspiration, you will design and build your own elaborate machine to complete a very simple task! Learn all about potential and kinetic energy while creating an exploding craft stick reaction. Make simple levers and pulleys, and use them to move different objects. Explore the science of geology while digging into the world of rocks and minerals! Become a rock hound while hunting for rocks around the planetarium. Using a magnifying glass, take a closer look at your collection and identify the rocks you found. Make your own mineral test kit to test the hardness of your rocks based on the Mohs scale. Learn how to use maps to find geological features in your area, and identify different geological materials used in the building of homes and communities. Conduct an earth science investigation. Does not include a planetarium theater show. Meets requirements: 1A, 1B, 1C, 2, 3A, 3B, 3C, 4A, 4B, 5, 6A, 6B, 6C, 8

Explore the world of engineering, and learn how engineers have helped shape our past, present, and future! Examine and use blueprints to help design and construct a project. Learn and practice civil engineering principles by building a bridge to take home. Build a marshmallow launcher, and explore aerodynamics through stomp rockets. Meets requirements: 1, 2A, 2B, 2C, 3, 4

Overnight: Adventures in Science

Discover how scientists ask and answer questions while you design and perform experiments pertaining to astronomy, physics, and electricity. Build a model solar system while charting the distance between the planets. Study the night sky while sketching the appearance of the North Star and the Big Dipper at various intervals during the evening programming. Build and launch a model rocket to investigate ideas related to force and motion. Create electrical circuits using light bulbs and batteries. Includes a planetarium theater show. Meets requirements: 2, 3C, 3D, 3E, 3F

Boy Scouts Merit Badge Workshop

Boy Scouts Merit Badge Workshop


April 28, 2018
Time: 9:00 am-4:00 pm (Arrival 8:30-9:00 am) We will take a lunch break from 12:00pm-1:00pm. Lunch is on your own. Snacks will be provided during the morning and afternoon breaks.
Location: Longway Planetarium
Fee: $20 per person
Max Registration: 30 people
Description: Investigate the history of space exploration and the physics behind space flight. Build, launch and recover a model rocket, design a robotic mission to another planet or moon, design an inhabited base in our solar system, and explore Sloan Museum’s Be The Astronaut exhibit. Instructed by a certified Space Exploration Merit Badge counselor. Successful completion of requirements will be signed if the Scout has a Merit Badge card. Prerequisites: complete requirements 1, 2, and 8; read the Merit Badge Handbook; bring a signed Merit Badge card. Note: We will take a lunch break from 12:00-1:00 pm. You must bring your own lunch. Snacks will be provided during morning and afternoon breaks.
